FC Köln has announced the signing of 17-year-old Kenyan winger Maik Afri Akumu from Hertha Berlin, marking a significant acquisition for the club’s youth ranks as they prepare for the 2025/26 season. Akumu, a fast, fearless, and flair-filled left winger, has been hailed as one of the most exciting talents of his age group.

Born on July 13, 2008, in Berlin, Akumu is a product of Hertha BSC’s youth system, having progressed through all their junior teams since the U9 level. Last season, while primarily a U17 player, he gained valuable experience competing with the U19 and Hertha’s second team in the Regionalliga Nordost. Akumu made a notable impact with eight goals in ten games during the U17 first round and accumulated two goals and one assist in five appearances for the U19s. He also made his debut in men’s football playing 34 minutes for Hertha’s second team in March 2025.

FC Köln’s technical director Lukas Berg expressed enthusiasm about securing Akumu’s signature, calling him “a highly talented offensive player” and one of the “most exciting talents around his age.” The club is committed to giving Akumu the time and support he needs to thrive at Geißbockheim.

Maik Afri Akumu also spoke passionately about his move, stating that FC Köln made him feel welcome from day one and that the club’s recent performances impressed him. He is eager to give his all for the team and continue his development in a new environment.

With his blend of speed, skill, and attacking instinct, Akumu represents a promising future star for both FC Köln and Kenyan football. His transfer from Hertha Berlin underscores the growing recognition of Kenyan talents in European football ranks, and fans will be watching keenly to see how his career unfolds.
