Gor Mahia Edge Bandari 1-0 to Lift ODM@20 Cup in Mombasa Thriller

Gor Mahia are champions once again. The record Kenyan giants beat Bandari FC 1-0 in a hard-fought ODM@20 tournament final at Mbaraki Sports Club, thanks to a stunning second-half free kick from substitute Ebenezer Adukwaw.

The victory capped off a spirited week for K’Ogalo, who proved their winning mentality despite fielding a rotated squad.

A Tight First Half with Few Openings

The final began cautiously, with both teams wary of each other’s attacking threats. Bandari looked organized in defense, while Gor Mahia relied on quick counterattacks and midfield control from Austin Odhiambo.

Gor came close to scoring in the 20th minute when Christopher Ochieng’s shot rattled the post, leaving Bandari goalkeeper Levis Opiyo rooted to the spot. Despite several promising moves, neither side found the net before halftime.

Adukwaw’s Moment of Brilliance

The game’s defining moment arrived in the 64th minute. Awarded a free kick nearly 35 yards out, Ebenezer Adukwaw stepped up and delivered a curling strike that left Opiyo helpless. The ball dipped perfectly into the top corner — a goal worthy of a final.

From that point on, Gor Mahia managed the game with maturity. They slowed the tempo, kept possession, and defended with composure as Bandari pushed forward in search of an equalizer.

Bandari’s Late Efforts Fall Short

Bandari, who had eliminated AFC Leopards in the semifinals through penalties, fought hard in the dying minutes. However, Gor’s defense, marshalled by Philemon Otieno and Geoffrey Ochieng, stood firm to preserve the clean sheet and secure the ODM@20 crown.

It was a frustrating evening for Coach Yusuf Dere’s side, who created few clear chances despite enjoying possession in the final stages.

Gor Mahia’s Depth Shines Through

Coach Charles Akonnor, who fielded a mix of regular starters and young prospects, praised his team’s discipline and adaptability.

“This win shows the character of this group,” Akonnor said after the match. “Everyone stepped up when it mattered, and that’s the mark of champions.”

The victory also came with a KSh 1 million cash prize, while Bandari pocketed KSh 750,000 as runners-up. In the third-place playoff, Shabana FC edged AFC Leopards 1-0 to round off the weekend.

Looking Ahead

With the domestic league set to resume next week, Gor Mahia’s triumph in Mombasa sends a strong message to rivals. The performance, especially from their substitutes, underlines a growing squad depth that could prove vital in their title defense.

For Bandari, the focus now shifts to consistency in the FKF Premier League — a challenge they look ready to meet after a resilient run in this tournament.

As the celebrations continue in Mombasa, one thing is clear: Gor Mahia’s winning DNA is alive and well.
